IT IS WITHOUT QUESTION THAT INTERNET TELEPHONY SYSTEMS ARE HERE TO STAY, and their use and deployment will only increase as time progresses. Managers in high-technology companies must understand the nature of Internet telephony, its various components, that it means different things to different people and markets, and at least be familiar with the underlying technology that drives it. Internet telephony could mean two people communicating via voice on their respective PCs with no telephone used at all. On the other hand, a 75-year-old man who has never owned nor touched a PC could pick up a telephone manufactured and purchased in 1962 and make a call to his brother in England, also using a standard telephone, via a Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) link. In the latter case, the elderly brothers would have no idea their call was being transmitted over a data network.
