Explanation, Analogy, and Transfer in an Intelligent Tutoring System Paradigm
Mark L. Miller, Scott R. Lucado · 2013
An investigation is reported into the feasibility of integrating intelligent tutoring systems, conventional computer-based training, and interactive video into a hybrid instructional technology operable on personal computers. A 6-month effort resulted in a demonstrable prototype, combining a rule-based expert system with an interactive video courseware module, for teaching Army recruits to troubleshoot M16 rifles. The integration of intelligent tutoring with computer-based interactive video instruction, deliverable on inexpensive platforms, could ultimately revolutionize maintenance training. Further research—to explore more complete design examples and to investigate alternative architectures for authoring environments—seems warranted.
