What is the difference between hardware and software? Hardware is the equipment that you buy. If you buy a computer, a monitor screen and a keyboard, this is all hardware. Software refers to the programs that you run on your computer. Thus a wordprocessing package or a spreadsheet program is software. You should note the spelling of program. It has become the convention to spell it the American way.
