Crafting a User Interface Artist Portfolio

Even as recently as the PlayStation 2/Xbox era, UI wasn’t a high priority. You can look at some of the early games on those systems and see that. This has changed as games have evolved and the esthetics and user experience have become just as important as other components of the game. Previously, and still to some degree, UI artists come from other art disciplines within games or from outside jobs like graphic designer or web designer. Although games have always had some sort of UI, and really nice looking ones for years now, UI art in games is still a very small pool of talent. This means good UI artists are always in high demand. This is great news for new UI artists looking to get into games. So without working on a game how does one craft a portfolio for a UI artist?
