Many tools for the AEC industry have not seen dramatic change for many years. CAD-based drafting is little more than a computerized drafting table, with a workflow designed to generate 2-D paper drawings as the final product. VDC tools have a fundamentally different goal when compared with CAD and drafting tools. VDC processes create full, detailed simulations of projects, whereas traditional methods create only partial representations of the project. CAD lacks the data component of BIM. The enormous amount of data generated and processed by VDC on a project requires specific tools for effective data management.
