Spectrum Mobility in Cognitive Radio Networks Using Spectrum Prediction and Monitoring Techniques

Prabhat Thakur, Ghanshyam Kumar Singh · 2021

The cognitive user (CU) senses its radio-frequency environment to perceive the unutilized bands of the primary user (PU), then accesses these bands using spectrum accessing techniques, and finally establishes communication on these bands. In the spectrum prediction, the CU predicts the emergence of PU on the basis of pre-available information about the channel states; however, the spectrum monitoring is a recently developed technique in which the CU detects the emergence of PU during data transmission period on the basis of received packets’ statistics such as receiver error count. The spectrum prediction and monitoring techniques are exploited, simultaneously for the spectrum mobility, to improve the performance of cognitive radio networks by detecting the emergence of the PU quickly and correctly. The spectrum mobility techniques are generally of two types, namely, the reactive and proactive. The AND and OR fusion rules are used to combine the results of both the spectrum monitoring and spectrum prediction techniques.
