Chapter 3 is a guided “tour de force” in analog design building from the transistor up to higher level functions and leading to the implementation of a complete voltage regulator. Current mirrors, voltage references, buffer stages, and other elementary blocks are developed first. Then they are assembled in to more functional blocks like operational amplifiers, linear and switching voltage regulators. Stability analysis and Bode plots of a voltage regulator closed loop system are also discussed. Finally a few digital elementary blocks like NAND gates and Set-Reset flip-flops are discussed and subsequently integrated into an analog control loop to provide an example of mixed signal voltage regulator design.
