Forty million credit card numbers hacked
Computer Fraud & Security · 2005
A hacker has accessed forty million credit card records, which covers all types including Visa and MasterCard by infiltrating a US-based card payment processor - CardSystems Solutions. MasterCard said it spotted the breach, which has compromised nearly 14 million of its branded cards. In a contradictory statement, CardSystems said it “identified a potential security incident,” back in 22 May. However, MasterCard said it unearthed the vulnerabilities at CardSystems, which enabled the attacker to infiltrate the network and access the card numbers. The compromised information does not contain social security numbers or dates of birth. The hacker is believed to have had access to the numbers since late last year. MasterCard said it believes that only 68,000 of its numbers were stolen.
