This chapter is about compilers and interpreters for high-level languages. This branch of software is very well understood, and research into new and improved languages is now somewhat stifled by the practical need to use established and standardised systems for writing programs. The most widely used languages — COBOL, FORTRAN, BASIC and CORAL — are far from being the best.
