Three-Dimensional Manifolds

David B.A. Epstein · 1992

In this chapter we investigate which compact three-dimensional manifolds have fundamental groups which are automatic. We are not able to solve this problem in general-we need to restrict to the class of three-dimensional manifolds satisfying Thurston&s;s Conjecture (see [Sco83]), but this may turn out to be no restriction at all. Note that Thurston&s;s Conjecture has been proved in a number of cases (see [Thu82]).
