User Modeling

Pradipta Biswas, Mark Springett · 2017

A model can be defined as “a simplified representation of a system or phenomenon with any hypotheses required to describe the system or explain the phenomenon, often mathematically”. Modelling human or human systems is widely used in different branches of physiology, psychology and ergonomics. With the advent of interactive systems, simulating users' behaviour for both understanding and predicting human computer interaction becomes important. However the term 'user model' is often debatable based on its purpose, representation and implementation. This chapter highlights conflicting issues about user modelling, discusses different types of application-agnostic user models focusing on modelling cognition, perception and motor-action and finally takes an attempt to standardize the concept of user modelling.
