2007 sees profile of IT security soar for wrong reasons

The past year has been controversial with the topic of information security being heard outside the IT department, even becoming a talking point among world leaders. The year started and ended with explosive data breaches: TJX's four million-card breach in January and the UK's HM Revenue & Custom department's lost discs containing 25 million records in November. The compulsory data breach notification in the US is undoubtedly leading to a more transparent culture – a trend, which looks more and more likely to catch on in Europe and elsewhere. It looks like mass public breach embarrassments may be the best remedy for getting IT security in order. Sarah Hilley takes a snapshot look at the past year.
