Wireless data services are important, if not essential in today’s operational environment. Many law enforcement administrators view the laptop computer in the car as a standard equipment item, similar to the siren, the light bar, and the radio. Even this viewpoint is changing as the new millennium brings handheld computers into the realm of everyday consumer use. An important service extension is the ability of the computing device to connect to systems and databases wirelessly. This chapter surveys private and commercial wireless data options.
