We would like to report a new hazard associated with propofol ampoules. Sitting down for lunch, we noticed that all three of us had cut a finger on removing a propofol ampoule from its box. Our Trust has switched to a new supplier (Fresenius) of propofol in the last few weeks. The cards holding the ampoules in place have extremely sharp edges and corners (11, 12). We are sure our injuries are not due to clumsiness but a fault in the box design. We would like to warn others of this potential hazard. The manufacturer is being contacted and will hopefully rectify this. Sharp edges on card holding ampoules in place. Sharp edges are hazardous when removing ampoule from box.
