Eye-Tracking Enhanced Human-Computer Interaction on E-Shopping Website: A Preliminary Study on Physiological Mechanism

Weizhe Li, Fei Hu · 2020

Objective: Standardized questionnaire, behavior data, and eye-tracking data were conducted assessing eye-tracking assisted interaction under e-shopping scenario in explaining the promotion of interaction performance from physiological perspective. Background: With the development of new technologies, eye-tracking has been intensively conducted into Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Except recording visual perception process, eye-tracking also has the potential to be an interactive tool like mouse and keyboard, which can improve user performance. Method: Here we built an eye-tracking assisted interaction system, enhanced system robustness by signal smoothing, and designed an e-commerce purchasing experiment in B2C webs under Windows platform in validating system usability under e-shopping scenario. Result: The eye-tracking assisted system meets or exceeds the SUS benchmark of common hardware and was highly rated in the simplicity, ease of learning and the intuitiveness; Behavioral result showed that the operation load is significantly reduced in condition with eye-tracking assisted, which proves that the user can complete the current task faster and more focused; Eye-tracking data also indicates that user’s cognition involved less and they became more focused on given tasks with the help of our system.Application: Eye-tracking assisted interaction can be integrated into tasks where there requires both mental attention and interaction efficiency; Signal smoothing module is a considerable option optimizing user experience in similar solutions.
