In Memoriam: Paul E. Green, Jr.

marked the passing of Paul E. Green, Jr., a great pioneer and the 1992-1993 President of the IEEE Communications Society.Paul leaves behind a close-knit family of five children and a vast network of close professional friends and associates in our IEEE and ComSoc communities, whom he mentored over the 60-plus years of his career.While many of us would be fortunate to make a single memorable contribution to the advancement of science and technology, Paul made seminal contributions to spread spectrum systems, radar astronomy and computer networking.His IEEE awards include Fellow (1962), the Aerospace Pioneer Award (1981), the Edwin Armstrong Award (1989) and the Simon Ramo Medal (1991).He received the ACM SIGCOMM award in 1994.He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1982, and was a Distinguished Alumnus of North Carolina State University (1983).He published many influential papers, the 1992 textbook Fiber Optic Networks, the popular Fiber to the Home: The New Empowerment, published in 2005, among others.
