Joint caching, forwarding and congestion control in named data networks
Ran Liu · 2016
The Named Data Networking (NDN) architecture has been proposed to achieve better utilization of bandwidth and storage resources in networks. A framework for joint design of caching, forwarding and congestion control named VIP has been designed within the context of NDN. The VIP framework employs a virtual plane which handles user demand rates, and an actual plane which deals with actual Interest Packets and Data Packets. Dynamic distributed forwarding and caching algorithms in the virtual plane are designed to achieve traffic load balancing, and to maximize user demand rates the network can satisfy. The control information from the virtual plane is then utilized to handle actual Interest Packets and Data Packets in the actual plane. Within the VIP framework, a congestion control algorithm is designed, and has been shown to maximize user utilities subject to network stability, when optimally combined with forwarding and caching algorithms.
