Margery Kempe, born at Lynn, Norfolk, c . 1373, was the daughter of John Burnham, five times Mayor of Lynn, holder of other civic offices and local Member of Parliament. She married John Kempe c . 1393 and bore him fourteen children, of whom at least one survived to adulthood. Margery’s career as brewer, miller, pilgrim and holy woman was varied; she travelled widely in England, made pilgrimages to Jerusalem and the Holy Land, Rome and Santiago, and also accompanied her widowed daughter-in-law to Danzig. Her husband and her eldest son died c . 1431; she was still alive in 1439 (see Atkinson 1983 ).
