The Camera

Jonathan B. Phillips, Henrik Eliasson · 2017

In order to be able to perform image quality measurements, a firm understanding of the operation of a camera is vital. This chapter introduces the camera, starting from the camera obscura and continuing with explanations of the lens, image sensor and image processing. A section on video compression concludes the chapter, together with a discussion about the importance of considering the camera on a system level, including the interactions between all its subcomponents.
