Introduction to the 25th Anniversary Issue of Inverse Problems

Inverse Problems · 2009

Inverse Problems finishes its 25th year of publication with this special issue, composed of topical reviews and one paper invited by the Editorial Board. Our instructions to the writers of topical review articles advise that comprehensive coverage is not mandatory, so this issue is not comprehensive. Instead, it presents in-depth surveys of a representative selection of central topics, from pure and applied mathematics and from several of the many areas of science and technology that give rise to inverse problems. The issue begins with a contribution from the Founding Editor of the journal, Professor Pierre Sabatier, whose account of the journal's early history serves as a backdrop for his thoughts on the nature of the subject. The extraordinary collection of articles following Professor Sabatier's review form a resounding finale to the first quarter-century of publication, and a rousing introduction to the next. William W Symes Editor-in-Chief
