Essential Hardware

Duncan Evans · 2020

This chapter looks at what film stocks can do as well as what resolution and type of digital camera is best for shooting portraits. Due to the use of a smaller charge couple device arid the arrangement with the lens, compact digital cameras produce up to five times more depth of field at the same aperture as an SLR - this makes it much harder to get the background out of focus. Compact digital cameras suffer from shutter lag more than SLRs. This is similar to shooting speed and is more a feature of compact digital cameras. Slow film features fine grain - it is slower, requires more light and thus needs wider apertures or slower shutter speeds than faster film. In portraiture, the zoom lens has the advantage of being very flexible; as a short telephoto lens, it offers a good balance.
