The nail plate is composed of many strands of keratin that are held together by disulde linkages. The nail is known to behave like a hydrogel rather than a lipophilic membrane, unlike most of the other biological barriers. Owing to its unique properties, particularly the thickness and relatively compact nature, the nail acts as a formidable barrier to the penetration of topically applied therapeutic agents.
