Many problems still exist regarding the place of cardiac pacemakers in the treatment of a number of conditions. Furthermore the operational effectiveness of pacing algorithms and strategies requires more thorough assessment. A diagnostic pacemaker system has been developed to assist in resolving these problems. The system monitors both electrical and haemodynamic signals in the right chambers of the heart and provides VDD pacing where appropriate. This has the benefit of allowing the study of cardiac function as well as rhythm. In addition to statistical information, selective real time waveform recordings of the electrical, pressure and intracardiac impedance signals are stored for subsequent display and analysis. Waveforms are recorded both leading up to, and following an arrhythmic event. Pacing may be suppressed for a short duration to allow the recording of bradycardias and cardiac pauses.
