Low Noise Oscillators

Jeremy Everard · 2001

Chapter 4 describes to a large extent a linear and highly accurate theory, based on the author's latest research, for low noise oscillators and shows which parameters explicitly affect the noise performance. These parameters include: the optimum coupling coefficient between the amplifier and resonator for minimum noise and hence the loaded and unloaded Q, amplifier noise figure, the effect of coupling power out, the effect of the input and output impedance, open loop phase shift error prior to closure, varactor coupling for minimum noise performance. The measurement and reduction of transposed flicker noise is then described in detail. A brief introduction to non-linear modelling is described showing how to break the loop in oscillating systems. Extensive design examples are included.
