Generalized Factorization

One of the main motivations for the study of factorizations of matrix functions relative to a contour is that this factorization allows one to solve explicitly systems of singular integral equations with continuous coefficients. We now begin a study of singular integral equations with bounded measurable coefficients. In order for factorization to play the same role as before the definition of factorization must be modified. In this chapter the concept of generalized factorization is introduced. The generalized factorization depends on the space where the singular integral operators are considered and plays the same role for these operators as the role which previously was played by factorization relative to the contour.
