Sensors and Data Acquisition

Dimosthenis E. Bolanakis · 2021

Data acquisition (DAQ) term refers to the process of sampling an electrical or real-world physical phenomenon and converting the samples into digital data able to be manipulated by a computer system. This chapter focuses on the study of some of the most interesting sensor devices, as well as the process of collecting and real-time monitoring data to a personal computer, using solely freeware development tools. It presents an example on environmental measurements that explores the development of a DAQ system with an Arduino Uno board. Modern sensor devices constantly pave the wave for new solutions in embedded design and give rise to an opportunity for creativity and innovation. The chapter discusses some of the issues including detection of orientation, motion, gesture, distance, as well as color sensing. It explores the process of interfacing with a mobile phone, through Bluetooth protocol.
