What Is User‐Initiated Loss?

Ira Winkler, Dr Tracy Celaya Brown · 2020

This chapter examines some common categories where user-initiated loss (UIL) occurs. Although processes seem to have no direct relationship to users, how an organization specifies work processes is one of the biggest causes of UIL. Culture is very powerful, enabling vast amounts of UIL and facilitating losses in other categories. In the cybersecurity world, there are many massive failings due to cultural causes. Physical losses are generally straightforward to categorize. People often think of planning for physical loss in terms of their own immediate organization, but it extends beyond that. Criminal acts are unfortunately a part of business operations that criminal a need to be accounted for. User malice can take many forms. Sometimes it simply involves theft for personal gain. Proper training should ensure that users understand what their responsibilities are and how to perform them. The chapter also examines design and maintenance, user enablement, shadow IT, and user interfaces for technology implementation.
