Integrating Language and Content
Denise E. Murray, MaryAnn Christison · 2020
This chapter describes the characteristics of learners in different contexts where the learning of content and language takes place. It introduces some types of programs that have been successful in the contexts. Regardless of language background, all learners must demonstrate competencies in the same core content curriculum. The decision to integrate language and content in private language centers has been motivated by a curricular choice rather than a mandated requirement. A number of different acronyms have been used to describe programs that integrate language and content in the workplace environments. In US public school settings, the term sheltered instruction has also been referred to as structured immersion, specially designed academic instruction in English, content-based English language teaching, and mainstreaming. Checking for understanding of content and language must be an important part of every lesson and is a defining feature of successful models for integrating language and content.
