Distributed Databases

S. M. Deen · 1985

Over the last decade the database technology has established itself as a principal means of satisfying the information requirements of large and medium-sized organisations. As more and more databases are implemented, the need for interdatabase communications will become very important, particularly to the corporate management. The prevailing spirit of decentralised management, with local control and at the same time co-operating at a higher level for greater good, makes distributed databases very desirable. With cheaper and more reliable hardware and communication links, this technology is expected to provide a real alternative to centralised processing. It is particularly attractive to multisite and multinational organisations with decentralised operations but requiring intersite information for integrated control at the corporate level.
