Grad Program Involves Automatic Analysis

Chemical & Engineering News · 1962

A graduate program designed for advanced training in instrumental analysis has been included in the curriculum of Oregon State University, Dr. Harry Freund, professor of chemistry at the university, told the 15th Annual Summer Symposium on Analytical Chemistry, held at the University of Maryland, College Park. The program involves design, construction, and testing of automated methods of repetitive and continuous analyses. The method of conducting the course involves the assignment of a typical industrial analytical chemistry problem to the class. The Oregon State professor notes that instrumental methods are appearing with increasing frequency in undergraduate curriculums and there is continuing improvement in the quality and scope of instruction. Chemistry freshmen today are familiar with potentiometric titrations and the pH meter. Sophomores study spectrophotometry. And formalized courses in elementary instrumental analysis are available to almost all graduating chemists. Thus, Dr. Freund points out, advanced training in instrumental analysis, relieved of much ...
