Packets Encapsulations and Their Routing
Rajib Taid · 2021
This chapter presents the user data packets encapsulation methods applied in a mobile communications network while transferring information between two network elements over a particular interface. Data packets encapsulations may be applied while communicating over the air interface or between network elements of a core network (CN). This chapter deals with the Internet Protocol (IP) packets encapsulations applied at the CN. It describes the methods through which packet encapsulations are performed at the radio access network and CN ends. The chapter also presents how the packets encapsulations are used to route user traffic between the ME/User Equipment (UE) and the CN, irrespective of the current location of the mobile user/mobile station/UE. It concludes with the IP header compression and decompression that is applied to user data packets over the air interface, its methods, and usages over a low bandwidth network.
