Articulation Testing in Moderate Sized Rooms, I

D. D’Eustachio · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1960

Difficulties are experienced in using articulation tests for comparing high-quality systems because the scores are too high for good sensitivity. In a series of experiments using air transmission tests in rooms with volumes under 10 000 cu ft it was possible to increase the difficulty of the task so that scores did not exceed 85% under optimum listening conditions. The scores were lowered by training the listening crew to take down ten speech sounds (read as a group of three nonsense syllables in about 112-sec) in less than 6 sec. Score stabilities were such that, with a total of 54 or 108 tests using nine listeners and six readers, differences in mean scores of a few per cent were significant at the 1% level. Details of training program, experimental design, and test material used will be presented.
