Telepresent teaching
Augden F. Windelborn · The Physics Teacher · 2000
A new physics tool is quietly developing on the Internet. The tool is telepresence and its application to physics and teaching is filled with promise. What is telepresence? The name appears to be a contradiction—present at a distance. Currently, telepresence allows a computer user to effectively be present at some other location through the use of remote cameras, sensors, and controls. This means that a user at location A can see, hear, talk to, and control operations at location B. Effectively, telepresence is similar to a “picture phone” with the addition that user A can control and acquire data from instruments at location B. The involvement of the physics com!!munity in the development of the World Wide Web is well known. Telepresence will evolve over the next few years into a much more sophisticated tool and again physics (and physics teaching) can play a leading role.
