Password Correction and Confidential Information Access System

Martin Tomlinson, Cen Jung Tjhai, Marcel Ambroze, Mohammed Ahmed, Mubarak Jibril · Signals and communication technology · 2017

This chapter considers the use of Reed–Solomon codes to correct user mistakes or missing parts of long entered passwords in an encrypted, information retrieval system or a password-based authentication system. Dynamic, user-specific mapping of Galois field elements is used to ensure that passwords, arbitrarily chosen by the user, are valid codewords. A typical system is described based on GF(256) and the ANSI character set with worked examples given for encoding and password correction. Security is also enhanced by the user-specific Galois field symbol mapping because this defeats Rainbow tables when used with long passwords. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
