Development and Maintenance Processes

Steve Tockey · 2019

This chapter discusses alternative software development and maintenance processes and provides guidance on deciding when to choose one over another. Topics in the chapter include: separating phase and activity; agile development, strengths, and weaknesses; waterfall development, strengths, and weaknesses; one size software process does not fit all; and meta-process. One can use the meta-process to guide in selecting a process that is best suited to the needs of his/her project. It can be perfectly reasonable to use a development process that was never published in a book or paper. The chapter presents an overview of that meta-process: build a project charter; assess risks; assess assets; and plan. The lifecycle choice becomes just another planning decision and needs to be based on the charter, risks, and assets. The chapter also tabulates the quality criteria used to evaluate project lifecycle/development process choices.
