Coexistence mechanisms

James P. K. Gilb · 2011

The wireless medium is, by its nature, a shared medium. Because of this, the development of the 802.15.3 standard considered various methods of coexistence and adopted various methods and recommendations that enable compliant devices (DEVs) to achieve a level of coexistence with other IEEE standards. The coexistence approach for 802.15.3 focused on a variety of areas, ranging from the selection of the physical layer (PHY) channels to the ability to coordinate timing with networks that are not 802.15.3 compliant. The mechanisms for coexistence in 802.15.3 will enable other WPANs and WLANs to operate in close proximity to 802.15.3 piconets. The chapter presents some of the calculated results for 802.15.3 piconets operating in proximity with other wireless networks. Controlled Vocabulary Terms wireless LAN; wireless personal area networks
