What Synchronization?

It is pointed out that dynamical synchronization need not be the mechanism behind the periodic and quasi-periodic global behaviour in cellular automata, which has recently received much attention. Similar behaviour may result from global synchronization via the initial state of local, non-interacting, cyclic subsystems. This is illustrated with examples of cellular automata in one and two dimensions.
