Driver Monitoring for the Electric Wheelchair Using Image Data Processing

Rikiya OKAWA, Shuro Nakajima · The Proceedings of Mechanical Engineering Congress Japan · 2021

In recent years, the number of productions of electric wheelchairs has been increasing. With this increase, the possibility of accidents is likely to increase. In response to this, it is necessary to create a safety system for electric wheelchair users. Therefore, we consider driver measurement for electric wheelchair users, referring to driver monitoring system (DMS) of automobiles. Like a general DMS, we created a system for fatigued driving, and used image processing to predict the driver’s fatigue level. In the experiment, a camera attached to the wheelchair takes a video of the riding situation, and this video is processed by the proposed system. We verified the comparison between the normal state and a pseudo dozing state in which driver’s eyes intentionally closed. As a result, some subjects were identified these states, while others were not.
