BADco. and Daniel Turing: Whatever Dance Toolbox

Whatever Dance Toolbox (WDT) is a product of the long-standing collaboration between the performance collective BADco. and German human-machine interface developer and artist Daniel Turing. Whatever Dance Toolbox reects some of their mutual concerns regarding dancer-computer interaction and related choreographic thinking. A suite of software tools designed for analysis and development of dance and movement, it is a simple-to-use, technically non-demanding set of real-time video analyses which can work as an interactive mirror by displaying various transformations of a real-time video image and/or visualizations of the body/movements actually being performed. Daniel Turing explains it like this: My experiments involving real-time video analysis of human motion all circle around this question: What does the machine see? In my interactive setups, I am applying well-known computer vision techniques to a video signal recording human actors, trying to give a glimpse into the underlying processes, visualizing basic recognition methods and producing imagery that exemplies the computer’s “perception.”1
