Alan T. Waterman Award

In August of 1975, Congress established the Alan T. Waterman Award to mark the twenty‐fifth anniversary of the National Science Foundation and to honor the first director of the foundation, Alan T. Waterman. This annual award recognizes an outstanding young scientist. In addition to a medal and other recognition, the recipient receives a grant of up to $50,000 per year for a period of up to 3 years for scientific research or advanced study in mathematical, physical, medical, biological, engineering, social, or other sciences at the institution of the recipient's choice.
