Recoverability

Troy Martin Hughes · 2016

Software recoverability is introduced, a component of software reliability that describes the ease with which software can be restored after failure. Recoverability terms are described, including failure, recovery, recovery period, mean time to recovery (MTTR), maximum tolerable downtime (MTD), and recovery time objective (RTO). The recoverability growth model is introduced and compared to the reliability growth model. Recoverability principles (i.e., timely, efficient, automated, constant, harmless) and recoverability phases (i.e., stop program, investigation, cleanup, internal issues, external issues, rerun code) are described. The use of software checkpoints to facilitate recovery is demonstrated.
