Terrestrial Wireless Networks Based on Standard 2G and 3G Technologies

Nathan S. Blaunstein, Ben‐Shimol Yehuda · 2020

The wireless personal area network (WPAN), also known as Bluetooth (BT), was originally created by the Ericsson company in 1998 before other companies started to launch this system and the corresponding technology and protocols. BT technology is based on the 802.15 protocol and is called the 802.15.1 protocol. The WPAN-BT system is based on time-division duplexing technique, according to which the channel is divided into timeslots of 625 μs each. In 1990, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) established the 802.11 working group to create a wireless local area network (WLAN) providing a set of standards for WLANs. The IEEE 802.11 working group and the Wireless Fidelity Alliance came out as the key groups in creating different 802.11 protocol standards. A WiMAX antenna can cover metropolitan areas of several tens of kilometers for fixed stations and up to 10 km for mobile stations.
