Modelling Languages II

C.E. Dickerson, Siyuan Ji · 2021

For the more general systems engineering, class diagram, though potentially limited by its original scope, is equally important and useful due to one of its powerful underlying modelling concepts, classification using classifiers. This is fundamental to the modelling of structure, and hence, also to architecting. Unified Model Language (UML) sequence diagram focuses on the modelling of communications between objects through message exchange. This includes two specific perspectives: the order in which messages are exchanged to ensure desired system behaviour and the type of the messages to support interface definition. In practical modelling of complex systems, any extension of UML should be properly made through UML profiling, where additive modelling concepts, modelling elements, and notations are formally specified. It is important for the architect to realise the deficiencies of a modelling language against the architecting task at hand in order to extend the modelling language for a more accurate representation of the architecture.
