Inmate Classification
James M. A. Pitts · The Encyclopedia of Corrections · 2017
Abstract Inmate classification is a process of categorizing inmates into similar groups for the purpose of facility management. Classification systems are useful to aid facility administrators with facility management, programming, and security needs. Inmates are generally assessed based upon various risk factors to determine the appropriate level of security required. This process involves both objective methods, such as risk assessment instruments, as well as subjective assessments by correctional officials. An effective classification system is essential to efficient facility management.
