Understanding and Using Array Formulas

One of Excel's most interesting features is its ability to work with arrays in formulas. This chapter introduces the concept of arrays, and it is required reading for anyone who wants to become a master of Excel formulas. In Excel, an array can be one-dimensional or two-dimensional. These dimensions correspond to rows and columns. A two-dimensional array can be stored in a rectangular range of cells. Excel doesn't support three-dimensional arrays. The chapter deals with the mechanics of selecting cells that contain arrays and entering and editing array formulas. These procedures differ a bit from working with ordinary ranges and formulas. The chapter provides some examples that demonstrate additional features of multicell array formulas (array formulas that are entered into a range of cells). These features include creating arrays from values, performing operations, using functions, transposing arrays, and generating consecutive integers.
