Concluding remarks and future research directions

Investigating whether or not and to what extent pure product innovators have an advantage over pure process innovators has been drawing interest. Applying the quality function deployment (QFD) method during the early phases of a product development process to facilitate collaborative design concept evaluation has been increasingly gaining interest. Utilising the QFD method throughout an iterative design process without introducing too much complexity to the agile development process is thus a promising research direction (Benker and Raduma, 2014). Operational agility is a capability that enables design firms to sense changes in turbulent business environments and to take appropriate actions to seize market opportunities (Huang et al., 2014). Measurement of information sensitivity, synergy and fluidity in the process of developing information processing capability for operational agility is a promising research area. Order fulfillment is a key process in managing the supply chain of complex products. Examining how the design firm develops information processing capabilities to achieve operational agility throughout the order fulfillment process is a related promising area.
