The large electric breakdown field, high saturated current velocity, high thermal conductivity and other extreme properties of diamond make it an excellent semiconductor material for active electronic devices. For active electronic devices it is desirable to have insulating regions, p and n-type semiconducting material and Ohmic, Schottky or insulating contacts. The ability to serve as both the insulator and the semiconductor make diamond a versatile material for active electronic devices. For device applications, the high resistance of insulating diamond compares favorably to other semiconducting materials and to other materials used as insulators for semiconducting devices. For device applications it is desirable to controllably dope diamond to obtain both p and n-type material over a wide range of dopant concentrations. The performance of diamond transistors, depending on device structure, starting material, doping technique, and device processing technologies. The state of the art has shifted from demonstrating modulation of channel conductance to the characterization of multi-device analog and digital circuits.
