Law means Australia tech-civic priorities struggle
Emerald expert briefings · 2019
Subject The encryption law debate and its implications for Australia. Significance When parliament reconvenes from February 12, opposition legislators, under pressure from within their own ranks and from outside, will address several legal issues relating to Australia’s new encryption law for online messaging systems, with committee hearings recommencing on January 11. The Telecommunications and Other Legislation Amendment (Assistance and Access) bill became law on December 8, 2018. The law is intended to bolster Australian security. However, critics argue it will negatively affect technology and could weaken global security protocols if copied by other countries. Impacts Weakening encryption systems could aid extremists and organised crime. Any tech investment downturn would make overcoming structural challenges including skills gaps more difficult. A loss of confidence would undermine efforts to improve digital performance and economic productivity.
