Encoder Defect Could Produce False Signals & Stop Ventilators

Portable ventilators containing optical encoders manufactured by Computer Optical Products (Chatsworth, CA) were recalled by Lifecare Services, Inc. (Lafayette, CO). The encoder component that controls the piston drive of the Lifecare PLV-102 Portable Volume Ventilator “may produce false signals which could cause the ventilator to stall (stop), with alarm systems functioning,” according to FDA. A Lifecare spokesperson verified that the encoders could produce false signals which interfere with ventilator function, but emphasized that alarms will sound if the units should stop functioning.
