The purpose of statistical disclosure control (SDC) for microdata is to prevent confidential information from being linked to specific respondents when releasing a microdata file. The chapter starts by viewing the whole process of production of microdata for the users according to the five stages approach to SDC. It deals with the risk-assessment phase, and provides various definitions of disclosure; the relationships of these with protection methods are also outlined. The chapter describes methods that limit the risk of disclosure without perturbing the original data. Perturbative methods are outlined, and the approach to SDC based on the production of synthetic data is discussed. The chapter describes the ways to analyse information loss due to the application of SDC procedures. A short presentation of the software dedicated to SDC for microdata is given. Finally, it describes a few case studies. Controlled Vocabulary Terms computational statistics; statistical data
